Thus far, the mornings at the school have been eventful. A kindergarten went missing in the morning and we spent around 10 minutes searching for her; only to find out that her brother, who is in the grade 2 class that I have been placed with, had heard the school bell and decided to take her home because he thought he wouldn’t be let inside the school. The parents were the ones who brought them back while the teachers explained to the two children that they were worried and that they were going to have another safety talk. Another incident occurred in the morning where one of the students at the school, has behavioural issues, was seen trying to pick a fight with an older boy out on the playground. My associate teacher decided to take this individual aside and explain to him why this behaviour was not acceptable. This experience was eye opening at the realities that do occur at school and reminded me that teaching goes beyond just teaching.
The rest of the morning was spent prepping with my associate teacher roughly planning how the day was going to look like. She showed me how wonderful Pintrest is for teachers as well as another site called Teachers Pay Teachers. She had some of the kids do PM reading – to assess their reading level skill and allowed me to sit in and watch this process. For math they used ten blocks to use as a physical representation for their numbers. I was more involved with helping the children who were struggling with what they were supposed to be doing. They seemed more interested in playing with the blocks rather than using them to do math. However, I am glad to assist students where and when I can. Some of them I am going to have to be more firm with as they do not show me the same respect they do to their teacher- which is fair as I'm only there one day a week but I'm there to be an educator and not their friend as funny as their antics can be.
